A Chinese surname (姓氏, xìngshì) is a hereditary family name that appears before the given name — the opposite of Western naming convention. For example, in the name "Wang Wei" (王伟), Wang is the surname. Chinese surnames are typically one character long, though compound surnames with two characters also exist.

Chinese surnames are among the oldest family names in the world, with some dating back over 4,000 years. The classic text Hundred Family Surnames (百家姓, Bǎi Jiā Xìng), compiled during the Song Dynasty, is one of the earliest known surname compendiums. Today, over 500 surnames remain in active use, with the top 100 accounting for roughly 85% of China's 1.4 billion population.

Chinese surnames developed from several distinct sources over thousands of years of history:

• Clan and tribal names — the earliest surnames, such as 姬 (Jī) and 姜 (Jiāng), originated from ancient tribal affiliations in pre-dynastic China.
