No mature form of「福」has been found in oracle bone script, but the component「畐」(wine vessel) already appeared as a phonetic and semantic element.
In bronze script,「福」combines「示」(altar/deity) and「畐」(wine vessel filled to the brim), meaning offering fine wine to the gods in sacrifice and praying for blessings. Western Zhou bronzes commonly bear inscriptions such as 'May your years be boundless, may fortune and prosperity endure forever.'
In seal script,「福」became standardized —「示」on the left (associated with sacrifice and deities) and「畐」on the right (a brimful wine vessel). Together they convey 'divine protection and abundant blessings.'

In regular script,「福」is dignified and steady — the most common style for spring couplets, as written by the Qing dynasty master Huang Ziyuan.
In running script,「福」has flowing, connected strokes that are swift yet controlled. Though the 'Preface to the Poems Collected from the Orchid Pavilion' by Wang Xizhi does not contain「福」, his running-script brushwork has been widely emulated for generations.
In cursive script,「福」is written in a single sweeping stroke — as in Huai Su's wild cursive style — bold and uninhibited, capturing the joy of writing 'blessing.'
In clerical script,「福」features the classic 'silkworm head and swallow tail' strokes — horizontal and vertical, with the ancient, robust character of Han dynasty stone stele inscriptions.
In seal script,「福」preserves the most ancient structural form — symmetrical left and right, elegant and solemn.
In oracle bone script,「寿」combines「老」(old age) and「𠃋」(field boundary), meaning an elder living a long life.
In bronze script,「寿」had numerous variant forms, often carrying wishes for a life spanning a hundred years.
In seal script,「寿」has「老」above and「𠃋」below. The 'Shuowen' explains: 'Shou means long-lasting.'
